Home Improvement – Do it Yourself? Or Hire a Contractor? That is the Question…

December 15th, 2009 by mulrich No comments »

If you’re planning any major home renovations, you might be asking yourself, do I do the job myself and save some home improvement projectmoney? Or should I hire a contractor and save myself the hassle. Saving money always has its advantages but sometimes it may not always be the best idea depending on the situation. Before you decide to manage your own home improvement project, answer the questions below:

1.    Are you organized?

It’s one thing to know how to install drywall, lay tile or paint walls, but it’s another thing entirely to manage a project from start to finish. If the project is complex and you’re not famous for your organizational skills, you’d be better off hiring an independent contractor.

2. Can you manage a project budget?
Do you know how to set a project budget and keep track of running costs, so you’ll know where you stand at all times? Remodeling projects are famous for spreading from one area to another once people see how much better the improved area looks, and this can really have an effect on a home improvement project’s bottom line. If money is a factor at all for you, you’ll want to keep a close eye on how much is spent. Otherwise you might want to consider hiring a project manager or a contractor.

3. Can you set a schedule and stick to it?
Long-term projects require long-term commitment. That means you need to be able to set aside enough time to complete the project and keep pace with the ordering of materials required to finish the job. If you can only devote a small amount of time or you don’t think you’ll follow through with what is necessary to complete the job then maybe a “do it yourself” project is not the best option.

4. Can you let go of control when necessary?

Large jobs often require the use of subcontractors. Are you willing to bring others in to work under your supervision and allow them to do their jobs without hovering over them? If not, hire a contractor experienced with using subcontractors and ask in advance if they have a diverse network of them that can be accessed when needed.

5. Can you agree to give yourself regular updates?
A project manager or contractor would give you updates as a matter of course, and you should do the same. Scheduling a regular time, either weekly or biweekly, to review the project’s progress can help you determine aspects that aren’t on track. If you can’t or won’t do this, you might consider using the services of a project manager who can objectively guide the project to completion.

Tips For Reducing Moving Costs

December 14th, 2009 by mulrich No comments »

moving_tips_bannerMoving can be an expensive, especially if you have a large home. Fortunately for consumers there are many options that allow you to reduce moving costs. Albeit, you may have to do more of the work yourself, but there are multiple moving companies that offer services making your move a little less stressful.  These days there are self pack moving companies who offer storage “pods.” These companies give you the option to get some of the benefits of hiring a full service moving company while you sit back and save money. You will have to buy your own moving supplies and pack everything yourself but once you load the pod, the rest of the move is out of your hands. It’s an option that gives you both savings and convenience.

Whether you use a full service moving company, one of the many self pack moving companies out there or just rent or borrow a truck and move yourself, here are some ways you can save money:

Book Your Move Early - starting early will give you the broadest range of options when booking a truck, a self pack moving company or a full service moving company, allowing you to have an opportunity to find the best deal.

Book Round-Trip Instead of One-Way - you can often find special deals on round-trip moving truck rentals, so there’s a potential for savings if you get a trustworthy friend or family member to come with you and then return the truck.

Move During the Week Instead of on the Weekend – Saturday and Sunday are probably the busiest moving days of the week for any moving company. Try booking during the week you might be able to get a better deal and save a few bucks.

Consider Sharing the Cost - some moving truck rental companies have message boards that allow you to connect with college students or military personnel who are also moving allowing you to share the expense.

Get Used Moving Supplies – next time you are at the grocery store, keep in mind that plastic grocery bags make great packing material. It may take a lot of bags to equal other packing materials so make sure you have plenty. Start collecting them early and ask the store manager if they have additional bags they can give you that they may have already set aside for recycling. You can also use bed linens and towels for padding, along with newspaper. Just don’t use the newspaper directly against glassware, ceramics or anything collectible, because the ink can rub off.

Get Moving Quotes - use a service that will allow you to compare moving companies to get the best deal.

It Pays to Compare Home Services

October 23rd, 2009 by Saveology 2 comments »

Cable TV, Internet, Telephone ServicesAn occasional impulse purchase can be fun for even the most disciplined person. But when it comes to home services that charge monthly fees, you’ll be much better off if you resist taking the first offer you see and make sure the prices are the lowest available. There’s nothing like paying for a hasty decision month after month to get you to realize that it’s important to compare home services before you buy.

Most people in need of cable, Internet and telephone services tend to stick with the same company they have used for years, despite the fact that it could be costing hundreds of dollars a year. They don’t stop to think that there might be other options out there which could save money. By exploring these other options you might be able to uncover deals that you didn’t otherwise know about, such as bundling home services, or simply finding out about enhancements that may exist for your current services. Either way you have nothing to lose by doing the research and comparing prices so that you are able to negotiate the best deal for you.

So, if you are looking to save some money start today, do the research, compare pricing on home services you currently have, see what your options are, and save some of that hard earned cash! Never underestimate the power of telling a provider you’re going to take your account elsewhere for a better deal.

Learn How to Save Money on your Air Conditioning Bill

July 1st, 2009 by Common Cents 11 comments »

lady-with-fanGive your home an “Energy Audit”

Take a walk around your home (apartment, condo, single family) and make note of all the gaps and cracks you find. You can save up to 20% on your cooling bills by repairing those gaps and cracks.

  1. First start inside:
    • Turn off the electricity at the circuit bow, then remove the outlet covers to look for gaps.
    • You can either replace them with insulated covers (can cost anywhere from $3 - $4 each) OR use foam insets (gaskets) for around $49 cents each. You can find either type at your local hardware store. FYI… you can also insulate phone-jack covers as well.
  2. Check the junctures (layman’s terms: where windows meet walls, walls meet floors and pipe and wires enter the home.)
    • Plug any gaps you see with calk (a box of 12 can cost anywhere from $15 - $20 and a caulking gun can cost you upwards of $40.)
  3. Other areas to investigate for cracks and gaps:
    • Fireplace dampers, mail slots, wall-mounted air conditioner, attic doors, baseboards and weather stripping surround doors.

Extra tips:
Look for daylight, feel for drafts and listen for rattles.

Great Fashion in a Budget-Friendly World

April 3rd, 2009 by Deal Finder No comments »

saving tips on clothing shopping, clothes shopping on budgetLooking beautiful isn’t easy and it’s certainly not getting any easier in this down economy. The good news is that if you’re careful and look out for department store trends you can still be a fashionista without breaking the bank.

Ever find the cutest outfit ever in life? The color is to die for and it makes you look 10 pounds lighter? But sigh it’s just too much and it’s the first of the month… bill paying time. Don’t fret, wait a few weeks and buy it on a Thursday evening.

Why? After an item lingers in stores a month or so, retailers start dropping its price to get it out the door. In fact, try doing all your clothes shopping on Thursday evenings. There’s always something on sale - or better yet clearance - from the month before. Hitting the mall on weekdays means you’ll get a better selection. You’ll only get picked-over stuff on the weekend because the stores don’t have time to restock. By Thursday, most of the weekend sales have begun, but everything available is out there for you to check out.

How to Get Discount Makeup and Skincare Products

April 7th, 2009 by Deal Finder No comments »

How to Get Discount Makeup and Skincare ProductsCosmetics is a multi-billion dollar industry, but that doesn’t mean you have to spend that much to look fabulous. Take advantage of some simple ways to buy discount makeup:

1) Latest Promotions
We all know that the economy is shaky right now. But our wallets aren’t the only ones suffering. Big names in the business like Estée Lauder , Lancôme, Elizabeth Arden, Clinique, etc. are taking a hit just like everyone else. And you know what that means… more sales and discounts for us. These brands regularly have special promotions where they give away a cosmetic set with a minimum purchase. Some of these promotions are excellent deals if you use the products they’re offering. Just don’t make the mistake of spending money just to get the promotional items; make sure these are products you actually want and use.

For example:

a) Discount Clinique makeup: you get free shipping & sample with any $40 order and check out Clinque Official Site
b) Discount Lancôme makeup: receive a deluxe sample compact of color with any $35 purchase. Check out Lancôme Special Offers

2) Compare, Compare, Compare
Use one of the price comparison search engines to find the best price on name brand cosmetics that you use. Don’t forget to take shipping charges into account which can sometimes make what appears to be an excellent deal a deal breaker.

Check out BizRate.com and find out which online stores contain the best deals on discount makeup.

3)Discount Shopping Sites - there are customer loyalty programs out there that offer consumers the ability to shop at discounted prices as a result of product being purchased at wholesale prices.

4) If all else fails, try the drug store
Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it! Some generic brands have been proven to be of equal quality as the brand names. Check out the sales flyers on a weekly basis for coupons and announcements closeouts and clearance items.

How to Grocery Shop on a Budget (Part 1)

April 13th, 2009 by Saveology No comments »

grocery shopping on a budget, how to grocery shop on a budget, grocery coupon, coupon for grocery, coupon for groceries, groceries discount coupon, grocery discount couponThink the only way you can save is by becoming a coupon addict? That is so not the case! Cut your grocery bill in half by simply combining the use of grocery discount coupons, store promotions and the sales prices of your favorite items.

Plan ahead:

1) Keep your eyes on grocery promotions & local grocery sales

Use the stores’ latest flyer to pinpoint deals and plans your meals for that week around the sale items. Also, buy extra for the freezer so you won’t have to pay full price they next time you make a trip.

2) Create a grocery list

Have a complete list of everything you’ll need before you got to the store. This will help you avoid costly and unplanned trips to the store. As an added bonus, this will save you time. With a grocery list, you can breeze through the store and use that time to spend with the family or have time for yourself.

3) Be flexible with what stores you frequent

Just because you’ve always shopped at the local grocers down the street or you favor one chain of stores doesn’t mean there aren’t great deals out there. While you’re reviewing the flyers to pinpoint the latest deals, keep an eye out for grocery promotions and sales in other local stores. You never know, sometimes your favorite chain may not have the better prices.

Everyday Gas Mileage Tips for the Budget Conscious

Everyday gas mileage tips for the budget conscious

Gas prices may have dropped, but that doesn’t mean you can’t practice conservation. By learning ways to improve gas mileage, it will be good for the environment and your wallet.

Start by driving efficiently: Save $0.02 - $0.64 per gallon

  • Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking wastes gas. It can lower your gas mileage by 33 percent at highway speeds and by 5 percent around town).
  • Avoid keeping unnecessary items in your vehicle, especially heavy ones. An extra 100 pounds in your vehicle could reduce your MPG by up to 2 percent.
  • Keep your car in shape: $0.02 - $0.08 per gallon

  • Keep your engine properly tune. Fixing a car that is noticeably out of tune or has failed an emissions test can improve its gas mileage by an average of 4 percent.
  • You can improve your gas mileage by around 3.3 percent by keeping your tires inflated to the proper pressure. Under-inflated tires can lower gas mileage by 0.3 percent for every 1 psi drop in pressure of all four tires. Properly inflated tires are safer and last longer.

Cheap Thrills: Keeping Yourself and Others Entertained on a Tight Budget

April 12th, 2009 by Common Cents No comments »

cheap social activities to doAll hail the return of the dollar theater. Okay okay, movie tickets just don’t cost a dollar anymore, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t perfectly good theaters that are less expensive than the popular hang outs. A group of four can go out for an evening at the movies and only spend around $10 for a fun family outing. Keep a list of movies you want to see, and then check the discount theater listings each week. These theaters often keep the movies for just one or two weeks, so stay alert to what’s playing. On that note, drive-thrus are also making a comeback. Pay 1 price for a group of family or friends to spend the night under the stars watching the latest blockbuster.

Other Helpful Tips on Cheap Ways to Have Fun:

  • Go to the first show of the day at first-run theaters for the best prices (and shortest lines!).
  • Check your area for free days at museums, zoos, etc.
  • Make the most of any available student discounts. Show your child’s school ID at museums, zoos, galleries, theaters, etc.
  • Sign up for services who might offer discount movie tickets that you can purchase in bulk.

“I Am Looking for Discount Airline Tickets.” ~ Now what?

    April 13th, 2009 by Common Cents 1 comment »

I Am Looking for Discount Airline Tickets! ~ Now what?More than anything else, travelers want to find the best deal out there. It doesn’t matter if you’re planning ahead or are looking for last minute airline tickets. The trick about getting the best deal is the day you purchase.

When is the Best Time to Purchase Airline Tickets?

The best days to buy airline tickets are either Tuesday at midnight or early Wednesday morning in the time zone of your airline. Since most people search for discounts on the weekend (usually late Friday night), by early Monday the next week discount prices even out. Once someone puts a reduced fare on hold, they get 24 hours to purchase it. And that’s where Tuesday at midnight comes in. All of the discount airline tickets that were reserved, but not purchased, by 11:59 p.m. suddenly get canceled, and those fares come rushing back into airline computer systems as unsold seats - for a limited window of time… the perfect time for you to get some extremely cheap airline tickets.

Another Way to Get Very Cheap Airline Tickets

The departure city you choose can make a world of difference when it comes to getting cheap airline tickets. If you look at the top 10 most affordable airports, a good majority of them are smaller, secondary airports such as Burbank, California’s Bob Hope (instead of LAX), and New York’s Long Island MacArthur (in lieu of JFK, LaGuardia and Newark).

Finding a Safe Place for Your Money

    April 14th, 2009 by Deal Finder 2 comments »

Finding a Safe Place for Your MoneyDon’t trust banks anymore? More people are relying on personal money safes, instead of saving accounts. Sales of safes are doing very well in this recession, but is it really a surprise with the way this economy is?

With all the financial turmoil, many people are keeping their money out of the stock market and even their bank. Now don’t get us wrong. We at Cut Living Costs still believe in the financial strength of banks, but it’s no surprise that others are looking at other alternatives to protecting their money.

Keep in mind that if anything were to happen to your home and your money was somehow damaged, stolen or misplaced, you may not be insured for the loss. Make sure you check your insurance policy and applicable state laws to see how much of your money is protected.

Sometimes it might be a good idea to speak with an expert regarding the best way to handle your money saving woes. There are lots of places where you can get financial advice and speak with a personal financial advisor to help you work through all of your questions.

To Buy or Not to Buy Video Games – Gamers’ Woe During a Recession

April 15th, 2009 by Common Cents No comments »

To Buy or Not to Buy Video Games - Gamers' Woe During a RecessionFor gamers, a smaller budget doesn’t mean that you have to cut back on the number of video games you play - just re-think how you get them.

Stores like GameStop specialize in selling used video games in its stores at a lower price than the new video games. Or bid on games through auctions on eBay, where you can get the latest used games for less. eBay also offers new video games at “buy it now” options. The price may be a little higher than a used video game, but you sometimes get shipping for free or at a reduced price.

If you prefer to play titles, you can either rent video games from traditional Blockbuster stores or you can rent video games games online from GameFly.com (think of them as the Netflix of games). Another option for you to find some cheap used video games is Recycle Video Games Network. They sell and trade new and used video games and accessories.

Even if you want to keep buying new video games, you can avoid buyer’s remorse by taking advantage of the fact that many companies make short demos of their games available for free. Game demos for consoles such as the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 can be downloaded directly to those systems’ hard drives.

Eating and Staying Healthy During a Recession

    April 17th, 2009 by Deal Finder 2 comments »

Eating and Staying Healthy During a RecessionSometimes in our quest to cut costs, some important things go by the wayside… like our weight. It’s no secret that we tend to turn to fatty comfort foods and isolate ourselves when we’re under stress. Case in point? The only stock to rise when Dow Jones Industrial Average fell a record 778 points in September ‘08 was Campbell Soup Company. And it’s no surprise that sales of Spam have increased significantly since the recession began. The rising costs of food, layoffs and foreclosure scares aren’t enough… now we have to worry about our weight too!?

What to Eat to Stay Healthy?

Don’t let this recession get you down and get your weight up. Try these tips for keeping fit during a down economy.

The $1 menu is NOT your friend:
    - It’s easy to pull up at the drive-thru and feed the family for $5. Just think about it, eat cheap now, and pay expensive medical bills later. Fast food is loaded with saturated fats that can contribute to obesity, high  cholesterol and diabetes. While splurging here and there won’t harm you, making that $1 menu a big part of your diet can be detrimental to your health.

Inexpensive healthy meal options are out there
    - Buy frozen, canned or fresh vegetables and add some protein to the vegetable dish, such as cooked whole grain pasta.
    - Eggs are and low-priced item that people tend to forget about. It’s low in calories, high in protein and really low in carbohydrates.
    - More and more, smaller portions are being offered at restaurants. Not only are these choices lower in price, but they’re good for you too.

Gym Membership Cost Cutting - Staying Healthy on an Unhealthy Economy

    April 16th, 2009 by Deal Finder 1 comment »

Gym Membership Cost Cutting - Staying Healthy on an Unhealthy EconomyGyms membership rates aren’t cheap, if you add up your monthly charge and the annual cost is usually around $500. Now don’t get us wrong, being healthy is extremely important. The last thing you want to add to your money woes is a doctor bill. If you know you’re really going to use that membership then don’t bother signing up. There are plenty of no-cost options for staying fit. Now if you really serious about getting into or staying in shape and you’re committed to taking a daily trip to the gym, then by all means sign up.

Don’t be afraid to bargain at the gym:
Always remember that you aren’t the only one hurting out there. According to the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association, the slow economy is a factor in the first nationwide drop in gym memberships in more than a decade. Here are some tips to getting a price break on your monthly gym memberships:

    - More and more gyms are offering awesome deals because they want to keep their customers and take advantage of our desire to cut living costs (insert shameless plug here). Rather than have you walk away from your membership completely, they’ll likely offer you a break to keep you around. So, before you cancel, sit down with someone on the gym’s staff to see what could be arranged.

    - This is also a good time to sign up for a gym membership if as long (as you’re really going to use it). Many gyms are waiving their enrollment fees and offering basic memberships for as little as $20 to $30 a month.

    - Don’t forget to ask for free guest passes. You can get anywhere from a few days to 2 weeks of access.

    - Of course, don’t forget to compare gym memberships before you sign up for anything! Comparison shopping is the way to go!

Check out some of the current gym membership special offers :

Swine Flu Prevention During a Down Economy

May 12th, 2009 by Common Cents No comments »

Swine Flu Prevention During a Down EconomyWe’ve all seen the news… the Swine flu H1N1 virus is on the rise in the U.S. There are a few simple and free steps to swine flu prevention. That’s right I said FREE - no masks or gloves no $40 kits. Just a little common sense and diligence and you can prevent swine flu from taking over your life.

Folow these FREE everyday steps to avoid getting the swine flu:

    - Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

    - Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.

    - Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.

    - Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

    - Stay home if you are sick for 7 days after your symptoms begin or until you have been symptom-free for 24 hours, whichever is longer. This is to keep from infecting others and spreading the virus further.

Don’t fall for any swine flu scam!

Natural Beauty Tips for Women on a Budget (Part 1)

May 12th, 2009 by Deal Finder No comments »

beauty tips for women on a budget

There are tons of expensive products and procedures for beautifying the skin and keeping it looking young and fresh. Try some of these all-natural, low-cost do-it-yourself recipes you can use to keep your skin young and glowing.

    Natural Skin Peels
Instead of expensive and possibly skin-damaging prescriptions, use eggplant, tomatoes or pineapple - they contain natural acids. Thinly slice the ingredients and place them on your face, covering the skin thoroughly. Leave on for 20 minutes, remove the fruit and veggie pieces and wash with warm water.

    Smooth your Skin with Yogurt
Yogurt contains lactic acid, a naturally occurring alpha-hydroxy acid that gently peels off the dead skin layer, giving you a smooth skin texture. Over time, yogurt can also lighten spots and even out a patchy skin tone.

    Remedy Rosacea with Cucumber
Peel the skin off of a fresh cucumber and puree the insides in a blender with one egg white. Coat your face with this mixture, leave on for 30 minutes. And then wash off with cold water. Use this mask daily and you should notice improvement within a month.

Financial Aid for Adult Students Returning to SchoolMillions of laid-off workers are being forced to make tough decisions about their futures. More than 5 million jobs have been lost since the recession began in 2007 and with no end in sight for job cuts, this is the time to recession-proof your career.

But how do you do it? The rising costs of tuition, books and miscellaneous fees can really take a toll on your quest to secure or even change careers.

Before you even decide on an educational institution do your research. Don’t go into debt funding your career change. Many organizations offer scholarships with no grade, test score or institutional requirements. Saveology.com for instance, just launched a $5,000 Working Adult Scholarship. All that is required to fill out a short survey. The contest ends August 15, 2009.

Great Video on How to Save Money with Coupons

June 1st, 2009 by Deal Finder No comments »

The Today Show has a great video on saving money with coupons. Joyce House, a.k.a the “Coupon Diva”, teaches you how to save money with coupons, even AFTER they’ve expired! Also, if you have extra food from your savings adventure, she promotes giving them away to charity. Four stars for Joyce! Favorite quotes from this video: “If you don’t have time to save, then you haven’t been broke enough.” and “If your money means something to you, you will invest the time.”

Keeping your kids entertained on a Budget (Part 2)

Keeping your kids entertained on a BudgetWeek 2… Let Them Entertain Themselves

Summer has arrived, and let’s face it the rising costs of child care is making it hard to keep your kids entertained on a budget. Instead of stressing yourself and your wallet out why not let them go off on their own? They would have to be of age to be left on their own of course! Sometimes it IS OK - for kids to entertain themselves all on their own in ways that aren’t hyper-stimulated and super-regimented.

Encourage your children to read draw or listen to music. You would be surprised on how the hours fly by when they are keeping themselves entertained.

    Other cheap kid activities include:

Blowing bubbles. Simply mix a little bit of dish detergent and water (if you run out of solution). Kids can have contests to see who can make the most or the biggest bubble.

Give them an art project, like an “I Love You Card”. Get them to make one for eveybody in the family. Trust us… they’ll love it!

Make paper airplanes. Let the kids make their own, decorate them and then fly them.

Stay tuned for next week’s entry…
