Before making a decision on what internet services work best for you, take a good look at the advantages and disadvantages on what each internet service provides.
Cable Internet Access
Advantages
- Readily available in most urban areas
- Works well with VoIP phone service
Disadvantages
- Rural communities may not be able to access the service
- The connection speed varies depending on the number of people in the area who are using it at the same time
- May not be appropriate for large businesses
DSL
Advantages
- Works with existing wiring
- Usually quicker than cable or satellite internet access, depending on the plan
- No sophisticated or expensive equipment is needed, only a modem and a filter for every phone
- Uses a dedicated line, so the speed is constant even if others in the area are using DSL
Disadvantages
- Cannot be used if your location is more than 18,000 feet from the telephone company’s central office
- Upload speeds aren’t as fast as download speeds if you use ADSL
- May not be appropriate for use with VoIP
- Some DSL services aren’t as fast as cable internet
- Not appropriate for large businesses
Satellite
Advantages
- Easy to install and operate
- Is available anywhere in the United States that has a clear view of the satellite
- Internet speed is constant
- Can be used by boats, mobile land vehicles and in areas where other internet services aren’t available
Disadvantages
- Costs more to install and monthly fees are usually higher
